I never expected to be a singer, you know
It wasn't on my horizon, I just wanted to be a guitarist

I never want to write a lyric

So, it was a real baptism of fire, really, you know
Also, playin' guitar and singin' are completely and uterlly different
′Cause when you′re the singer, you're the central focus
And if you′re playin' guitar, you just do it your way and getting into it
Which is totally different kind of fish than being a singer
And that took a lot getting used to it as well

And also, coming into States and joining the transition
From being a cult group which Joy Division were
And New Order were to start
I mean, every time we came back, our audience seemed to doubled in The States
And then trippled, and then doubled again, you know
Until, eventually we were playing to about like 23, 25 thousand people

That wasn′t on the great scheme of things neither
That increased the sort of personal responsability
Like, if you had a bit of hangover in the past
And, you know, you didn't feel too good, so what? You know
But if you′re playing in front of 25,000 paying guests?
You know, and there's a whole sort of entourage of people supporting you
And put all the equipment up and everything nice
It's quite a mental strain if you′re not feeling too good
