"Human Nature" was originally written by Steve Porcaro of Toto as an unfinished, deeply personal sketch inspired by a moment in his family life. During the production of "Thriller", a cassette containing the demo was sent along with other material to producer Quincy Jones.
Through what Porcaro later described as an accidental full playback of both sides of the tape, the unfinished song was discovered. Quincy Jones immediately felt its potential, and the track was later developed further with new lyrics by John Bettis before being shaped into its final form for Michael Jackson’s album.
