Well, I started in music when I was seven years old, more or less.
I started playing the guitar, singing in Latin American popular music
Eh, very influenced by my parents and my brothers.
who were always with the music
Eh, with the tangos, the rancheras, the boleros, the Cuban trova
Hey, the whales
And basically that's like the beginning and the encounter with music, right?
I start playing with my brothers, growing up in Medellín
What is my hometown?
And at 14 years old, huh
I discover rock and metal and
Another type of music that I had never heard before
And in fact I, I go crazy with this music
And sick for, for playing metal and for rehearsing and
Something that motivates me a lot to keep going.
In 1988 we started a rock band in Colombia.
It's called "Ekhymosis", hey, three friends and me
And we started playing metal at that moment
And we've been together for like 12 years
Over the course of 12 years, many things happen and many changes.
And a lot, it becomes like an experiment a bit "Ekhymosis"
And we began to experiment and see
To gradually find our sound
The band finally releases five albums, huh
And always at a very local level, right?
We couldn't, we couldn't go out, let's say, to other countries
But it was still a very big learning, ehm
Once the band is over, mmm, after 12 years, well
There is a bit of frustration and
And let's say like a trauma for everyone because
Because we remain as if in the air
But at the same time, there was no desire to stay together, right?
There was already a natural death, let's put it that way
That gives rise to me moving to Los Angeles.
So there at that moment, almost like madness, let's put it this way
I have decided to come to Los Angeles to look for opportunities
I knock on doors and I've been in this city for two years, more or less.
That was a very difficult time for me.
Let's say about the most difficult times, because
It was like breaking an entire lifestyle.
Let's say, being at my house with my family and my girlfriend and the group
To get to cut everything and be in a completely new place
A very, very musical city, but at the same time very big
So that change was difficult.
But at the same time, very positive, right?
I think here in Los Angeles is where I, huh
I really understand who I am and where I come from.
And I kind of learn to value a lot, eh, my country and my essence.
But at the same time I also fall in love with, with this city
And many things that Los Angeles teaches me, right?
And right there, in a period of time
Many things start to happen
Hey, Gustavo Santaolalla appears and listens to one of my demos
Which precisely I did here in, in Los Angeles and well
It gives me the opportunity to be with his record label at that time.
It's called "Surco" through "Universal"
And in the year 2000, the first album was released.
So Gustavo signs me with Universal, ehm
"Fíjate bien", is my first album as a soloist, released in 2000.
And then a lot of things start to happen.
Well, quite strange, I think for everyone
Like no one was waiting, uhm, what, what, what's up
You understand? What begins to happen with The Grammys and they come
The concerts and that whole process, right?
Then comes the second album, "Un Día Normal"
Eh, well, I just laugh more, it's incredible, right?
Like me every day when
I see what's happening I still can't believe it
Many things start to happen, many concerts
At first it's very difficult because my music, eh
It's like a mix between rock
It has elements of folklore and pop too.
So at the beginning there wasn't like a space on the stations
So they could play my music
Rock stations considered it to be more, very pop.
Pop stations considered it to be very rock
And my music stayed in the middle and no, I couldn't find a space
But little by little it was like finding the space
He settled in and with all the work, well, of all this time
Ehm, things have been changing a lot.
Right now we are on the third album which is, eh, "Mi Sangre"
And then I'm very happy
I think that this album for me represents how
What all my life I had somehow dreamed of how to do, right?
Music, very free music that has to do with my essence
That, that it complies with those tastes that I have of the
Of rock, also of popular music and sentiment
Of romanticism, but there is also anguish and nostalgia
And it's like what I told you, the music that I write
And the letters that I write have to do with, with that line
The one where we are all walking between life and death, right?
I mean, like, clinging to this world, very much in love.
But aware that there is that other, that end and that
For that same reason I want everything to be intensely
Well spent at this moment and
And seeing life as the greatest and love as the clearest
