Chestnut horse lucero, that for as fast as you were good
You won many races, I remember well you never lost
You never had defeat, from coast to coast it was no lie
Until that mare arrived, for whom you would even lose your life
His eyes so dark, staring into yours as if saying
That in those five hundred yards, you will let her arrive first
I have it very well in mind, all the people were betting on you
And your owner was very sure that his great fortune was at stake.
As I left the starting block, I saw the mare almost fly.
And you without running violently, giving him time to beat you
Chestnut horse lucero, like a knight with a lady
Your owner's fortune, half a body, was reduced to nothing.
Your desperate owner, reaching for his gun
If they have won everything from me, this horse only hinders me.
And without giving time for anything, with five bullets you rolled wounded
You fell beside the mare, you who had lost for her
You died looking at the mare, as if to say, "You're served."
Chestnut horse Lucero, today I will not forget your memory
